Joe & Kabir Lifestyle of Ancient Greece, Ancient China, & The Middle Ages
The lifestyles of Ancient China, Ancient Greece, and the The Middle Ages had many similarities and differences. One similarity that these civilizations share is that all of the elders were treated with more respect than other people in the civilizations because they had more wisdom and more experience. Another similarity they shared was wealthier people were able to participate in more banquets and had better meals. They consumed more meat, fruits, vegetables, and other delicacies that middle class people couldn't afford. In all three civilizations, women did not have as many rights that men did. For example, women in Ancient Greek, Ancient
China, and The Middle Ages usually stayed at the house looking after children and managing the household. One of the only times they came out of the house was when they were allowed to go to the stores to buy clothing or precious gems for jewelry. These civilizations all used slaves to help do their work. Slaves would carry stones for cathedrals, make the Great Wall of China, and did household work. Music was another part of ancient civilizations. The chinese played instruments such as the “pipa” or “ruan”, the ancient greeks played an instruments such as the “lyra”, and during the Middle Ages they played the “harp” and “fiddle”. As well as similarities, there was differences between civilizations. One difference is that feudalism was used in the Middle Ages and no other civilizations used it. Feudalism was more advanced rather than other civilizations' lifestyles. Another difference is that Ancient China did not participate in as many sporting events as Ancient Greece and the Middle Ages. In the Middle Ages people would spend much time in a church and Greeks preyed in Greek Temples. In the Middle Ages people made livings with different jobs such as lords, serfs, vassals, and knights, and these jobs did not exist in Ancient Greece and China. Also, in Ancient China, the Ancient Chinese made clay statues as art, in Ancient Greece, Greek Columns were made as art, and in the Middle Ages they made stained glass windows. Ancient China, Greece, and the Middle Ages all had some differences and similarities because no civilization could be exactly the same. These civilizations had their own way of living because of the different customs they followed. Each civilization had resources and skills that they put to use in their everyday life which resulted in different civilizations.

Lifestyle Rome, Mesopotamia, and Egypt
During the ancient times, many things were a common struggle in the everyday life of the people. It was important that all civilizations including Rome, Mesopotamia, and Egypt, worked towards a common goal; for themselves, including shelter, food, clothing, and an occupation. While some things in their cultures were similar, some things still remained different. People in Rome were all about luxury, while people in Mesopotamia and Egypt were more centered around work. All of these civilizations believed in superiority over others.
During the Roman times superiority was showed by your home, while in the Mesopotamian and Egyptian times, people showed wealth by wearing jewelry and nice clothing. In all civilizations including Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Rome, people had homes that reflect their money. The homes of the poor in rome were usually owned by rent. This is similar to the housing of the Mesopotamians because they lived in townhouse like facilities shared with other people. The poor lived in simple one room houses, while homes of the rich were more elaborate. Their homes consisted of a series of bedrooms grouped around a hallway, with corridors at entering the hall. The houses also contained the dining room, office, garden, and any utility rooms located in the backyard. The egyptian people lived in houses with terraces and gardens on the roof. The houses of the rich in Rome were very different than the houses of the rich in Mesopotamia because they were more elaborate and bold. The Egyptians people also had no bathrooms inside their homes, like the Romans. The poor Mesopotamian people lived in small mud brick houses, that sometimes shared walls with other houses, in a town house structure similar to how the Roman slaves rented rooms in the houses of needy families. The rich Mesopotamian lived in tall houses, almost three stories, that consisted courtyard, first floor, and bedrooms were located on the flat roofs of the house. All of the homes were different like how the Mesopotamian houses were built high and the roman houses were built elaborately, but the designs worked for the different nationalities of people.
In these ancient civilizations clothing was an important part of daily life. In Egypt citizens wore garments that were sometimes lavish but mostly their wardrobe accommodated their life, similar to the Mesopotamians and the Romans. Men usually wore a short kilt made out of white linen. The Roman people also used linen as a fabric for their clothing. Servants wore longer kilts, differing from the Roman and Mesopotamian wardrobe. Women wore fitted robes held by two straps. Usually the design on the robe was either feather like, had lines, or was plain and simple. The robes were made of cloth. Later in time women wore shawl like mantles over their shoulders. Everyone wore sandals, either made out of papyrus, leather or palm leaf differing from the closed toed shoes the Romans wore. The Ancient Romans interpreted their style from the Greeks. The women wore clothes resembling the Greeks, who wore tunics made of linen or woollen. The people draped the fabric around their bodies and kept it in place using chintens, a folded piece of fabric placed at the front and back of the body. The only difference between the outfits was the elaborate hairstyles. The Ancient Roman men wore togas. A toga is a huge half circle of fabric draped over the left shoulder and under the right arm. It could only be worn by Roman citizens. The toga of a government official always had a purple border, just like how the Mesopotamian people wore bright colors to show royalty and wealth. Ancient Egyptians also showed more detail in clothing to show more royalty. During the Roman Empire, imperial togas and tunics were often made of embroidered silk imported from China. The roman people used clothes to represent their wealth, as commonly done in Ancient Egypt and Ancient Mesopotamia. The Mesopotamians made their clothing out of natural resources and other materials that were available to them, similar to the Romans and Egyptians. Clothing was made out of wool and flax. These two resources were grown locally. Just the Romans the Mesopotamians wore light clothing in the wealthy you would have gold and silver earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Wealthy peoples clothing was made out of expensive material. Similar to the Egyptians the Mesopotamians, If you were rich you would also be noticed because you would wear brightly colored clothing. People in all Rome, Mesopotamia, wore lived in different clothes because all of their clothes accommodate to their lifestyle and way of doing things.
The one thing that was different and still remains different for all of these cultures is the food. The people of lower class in Rome, Mesopotamia, and Egypt ate porridge made of vegetables, or if they could afford it, fish, bread, olives, wine, and meat on occasion. In all of these ancient cultures the poor people ate food that did not have a variety. The rich people or Patricians could afford to feast everyday. They ate a meal of salad, eggs, shellfish, honey sweetened wine, sheep meat, pork meat, goat meat, chicken, goose, duck, beans, vegetables, fruit, dates, and cake. The people would host parties to gather with their friends.
In ancient Egypt death was a vital part of daily life unlike the influ death in the lives of the Romans and Mesopotamians. They egyptians spent their lives helping to die and rise into a new world. They were also very elaborate when complete the preparation for death.
The Mesopotamians, Egyptians, and the Romans all strived for different things, but the people are all connected in some ways, such as food and housing; although they added their own spin on daily life, beliefs, and practices.

Lifestyle
The Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Chinese had different ways of living. Everyone needs food to survive and everyone eats and grows different foods depending on where they live. The Chinese drank tea, noodles, and rice which made farming one of the most respectful jobs in Ancient times. When the Greeks drank wine, used olive oil for everything, eat fish, bread, and grew grains like barley. The Egyptians unlike Greece and China would eat meat. But like the Chinese ate rice and they ate bread like the Greeks. Education was an important part of the everyday life of the ancient people. The Egyptian boys and girls went to school unlike China and Greece only boys went to school. In Greece your education depended on what city-state you lived in. In the city of Sparta boys would learn how to fight. In Athens it was important to read and write because laws were written on stone. Egyptian education was very serious. Children were allowed to go to school if they can pay for the education.Boys started school at the age of five. They would practice to read and write. In schools if a student did not behave they would be beaten. Egyptians, Chinese, and Greeks all live in homes. Mostly the type of home was different depending on if the person was rich or poor. Poor people in early Egypt made houses from wooden posts and reeds. The ancient Egyptians lived in houses sometimes made from mud bricks. Poor people in China also lived in houses made of mud bricks. They were often only one room and the whole family needed to share. Greek homes were designed to keep people cool in the hot weather. They often had more rooms than the Egyptians or Chinese. Rich people had fancier homes with more rooms, furniture, and indoor plumbing.
Egyptians were not allowed to chose their wives or husbands their parents would. Men would usually get married at the age of twenty, women would get married at the age of fourteen. Children were allowed to go to school if they can pay for the education.Boys started school at the age of five. They would practice to read and write. In schools if a student did not behave they would be beaten. Egyptians would eat meat, rice and bread for the rich they would eat beef. For Egyptians there were many jobs like farming, pyramid building, others were scribes or priests. Sometimes people would become merchants and craftsmen. Jobs were not only for men women also had rights to have jobs like handling business.
Ancient China was prosperous they wanted to be separated from the other empires. They were different. Only boys went to school. Farmers were respected because they provided the grain for rice and noodles. People also drank tea. China invented most of the everyday materials that people might use today like the wheelbarrow, china, compass, kite, fireworks, silk, bronze, bamboo yo yo, and paper. China had some of the most beautiful silk and most expensive spices. Which made it such a good trading spot. Some empires tried to invade to capture China to get all of their spices and silk. So an emperor name emperor Wu decided to build a huge wall across the outskirts of China to keep out intruders. He called it the Great Wall of China. Now it is one of the most iconic tourist attraction in the world.
Ancient Greece grew simple crops like olives, barley, and other simple fruits and grains. They use Olive oil for more things than just cooking it was used as soap, perfume, and fuel for lamps. Goats were used for milk and sheep were used for wool and occasionally meat. Cattle and livestock was rarely used. Since of all of the water around Greece there was a lot of fishing but fish was a luxury that many people couldn’t afford.

Lifestyle: Mesopotamia, Rome, and Middle Ages
Romans, Mesopotamians and people living during the Middle Ages were all innovative. They learned how to live a comfortable life. The Romans mastered the basic needs in life so they were able to focus on their own comfort. They made baths to relax and socialize. The Mesopotamians were innovative in everything they did because they were the first civilization. Around 3500 B.C. , the first civilization started. They were wise because they had to solve many problems like how they needed to live and how to get food or clothing or how to build shelter. They lived in houses made of mud bricks.
Romans, Mesopotamians, people in the Middle Ages both worked as farmers. They planted foods and other items they needed. The Romans gave small plots to each family and the father and sons would farm. If the farm got too big they would purchase slaves to help them. In Mesopotamia everyone helped. The foods that they ate were mostly vegetables. Most of the people worked as farmers. They also worked with herding animals. They domesticated sheep, cattle, and goats. The plants they grew in the farm fields were millets, barley, dates, wheat, lentils, onions, garlic, turnips, lettuce, cucumbers, and apples. They soon were transporting goods and crops on the rivers. The manor system was meant to be self sufficient. They produced everything they needed. Serfs worked the land of the lord. This is similar of how the slaves worked on the courtyard.
All these people needed a place to live but the style of their houses were very different. The people in the Middle ages had wooden houses while the mesopotamians used mud bricks to build their houses. The great castle in the Middle Ages was not a single structure. There were series of separate buildings that are within the protected wall. They had water for lots of things like drinking, bathing, washing, watering crops, and wetting wood so it doesn’t lite on fire. The castle is also successful in a lot of ways. The castle was very important building where the king and queen lived. The castle was also for defense. The drawbridge was important for going in and out of the castle. If the drawbridge is raised, then no enemies can get in. But if the enemy does get in however, they have to pass the gatehouse. Both gates close in front and behind the enemy and the drawbridge closes. Then soldiers pour boiling water onto the enemy through murder holes. There are also small windows in the gate houses where archers can shoot arrows at the enemy at the same time when the soldiers above can pour boiling water onto the enemy. The great hall in the castle was also important in the castles where people can relax and socialize. There was dining and parties in the great hall as well. For the Romansthe poor lived in dirty, crowded, dirty streets while the rich lived in elegant mansions called domis. They had sun terrorists, courtyards the fish, and gardens. Rome houses were very costly. Roman houses were built as a series of rooms around the central courtyards. Slaves were housed in a separate quarters. And men and women were given separate quarters. Romans had little furniture in early years. The poor had very little. And for the Mesopotamians they lived in houses made of mud bricks.

Luke and Steven Lifestyle: Greece, Middle Ages, and Renaissance Ancient times had many similarities and differences. Greece, Middle Ages, and the Renaissance were all during times of creativity. All of the time periods adopted some ways of life from the others, and other ways of life were also born. Art, Architecture, and clothing were only some of the ways people would live their lives. Compare: Lifestyle defines who each person is. Ancient people living during the medieval and renaissance periods in Europe and the first civilizations in Greece were different, but also had similarities. All three cared greatly for architecture and artwork. They also were very religious and all three had chaos and destruction at one point. The renaissance was a time period that artwork and architecture was in need. The cathedrals all had magnificent architecture to them, while also representing their religion. The art inside the cathedrals were also beautiful. During the Middle Ages, many castles were constructed for defense and advanced architecture was involved. The crusades started because of religious disagreement. Their artwork during the time represented their emotions, for example sad paintings of death were made when the Black Death struck. Greece represented their architecture in beautiful temples and homes. They also were very skilled in sculpting. Greeks manufactured terrific temples and perfect palaces for their gods. The temple of Zeus in Greece used to contain an amazing sculpture of Zeus. The sculpture was made out of ivory and gold. There was also several differences in the way the lifestyles developed. Greece and the renaissance had different ideas of architecture. Renaissance had tall cathedrals to show souls going to heaven. Greece however had big stone buildings with pillars. Cathedrals never had pillars they were just one big building. Also Greeks were not Christian but in the middle ages and renaissance, people were christian. Greece didn't have the Black Death like Middle Ages and Renaissance periods. The Renaissance had many innovations to their empire such as the postal service. Contrast: All of them had some differences. During the Middle Ages, the inhabitants of castles usually stayed in their castle, where as Greeks would travel and trade with other countries. The Renaissance also traded with other countries and they shared ideas too. All of the time periods wore very different clothing. During the Middle Ages, tunics were very popular. A tunic was one piece of clothing that went from your shoulders to your feet. Middle class people might have worn a shirt and pants, while wealthier people wear beautiful gowns and robes. People in the Renaissance wore robes made out of silk for fancy people. Other people used fabrics. Royal families could wear purple clothing. Sumptuary laws came into effect. These prevented peasants from wearing clothing that didn’t represent them. Clothing represented you class and authority. Greeks wore tunics and togas. A toga was a piece of clothing that had one shoulder strap that went across your chest. It went from your shoulder to below your knee. Greece, Middle ages, and Renaissance all were times that innovations came into play. All had beautiful architecture with their sculptures, buildings, and art. Two out of the three time periods followed the same religion of Christianity, and Greece followed their methodical gods that they believed in. The middle ages and renaissance had a sad time when the black death came and killed ⅓ out of the population of Europe. Greece, Middle ages, and the Renaissance all were very self-sufficient and were around for a long time. In the end they all had similarities and differences, and comparing them lets us know how they used to live.

Lifestyle: Greece, Middle Ages, and Renaissance
Ancient times had many similarities and differences.
